What is the best way to treat chronic hives?
If you’re looking for natural remedies to your chronic hives, you’ve come to the right place. But the solutions you’ll find on my blog, social media, and inside my chronic urticaria Facebook group are not the typical answers being shared by other health practitioners.
As a functional medicine coach, my approach already differs from that of conventional medicine. I believe when given what it needs, the body is capable of healing itself…without relying on medications or creams.
Inside my coaching program Hive Free in Less Than 90 Days, I combine the principles of nutrition, functional medicine, and energy healing to help my clients uncover the root cause of their chronic hives, and find natural solutions that work.
So…how is my approach different from what you’ll find in a typical doctor’s office? Or from the hundreds of blogs claiming to have the best natural ways to treat chronic hives?
Here are the key things that set my work apart…
I don’t recommend the low histamine diet
I want to address this first because most people looking for natural remedies to their chronic hives start with the low histamine diet.
And although nutrition is a powerful tool when it comes to healing the body, the low histamine diet is not the way to go.
Unlike other holistic health practitioners, I do not recommend this diet for a few reasons:
- It’s not a long term solution
Cutting out high histamine foods does nothing to address why you have high histamine in the first place.
Many people don’t understand that food is not your actual problem. It’s about what your body’s doing with the food. If you’re unable to absorb nutrients or break down certain enzymes, it’s likely you’re struggling with a leaky gut.
Each of us produce an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO). It’s job is to break down histamine and it’s produced in the gut. If you have a compromised gut lining, chances are your body has insufficient DAO levels to clear excess histamine from your body, which can trigger an immune response, and lead to a flare.
Avoiding high histamine foods may regulate your body’s histamine temporarily, but it won’t heal your gut or stop your flares long term.
- It’s too restrictive
Not only does this diet fail to recognize the root cause of your hives, it also excludes a lot of healthy foods you should be eating.
Bone broth, fermented foods, citrus fruits, leafy greens, and avocado are all excluded in this diet. These foods support immune function, and are critical to overall health. Eating a diverse diet also supports the good bacteria in your gut.
Instead of prescribing a low-histamine diet, I help my clients eliminate inflammatory foods like dairy, gluten, sugar, and processed junk with my 7 Day Clean Eating Challenge. I also work with them to uncover any food intolerances that could be inflaming the gut and activate their natural detoxing capabilities in my 30-Day Reboot.

When it comes to healing your hives, nutrition is the core pillar that cannot be skipped. But what do you do when you need instant relief fast?
Anti-histamines, steroid creams and anti-itch lotions can provide temporary relief while you do the deeper healing work. However, the key word here is temporary.
The second thing that sets my work apart?
I don’t view medications or topical solutions as permanent solutions
And trust me when I say I’ve seen people on all kinds of cocktails!
Anti-itch drugs like Cetirizine, Desloratadine (Clarinex), Benadryl, Hydroxyzine and Fexofenadine can give you temporary relief, but can do more harm than good in the long run. And let’s not go down the road of Xolair 😱!
Medications are an added burden on your liver and need to be detoxified by the body. If your liver already struggles with detoxifying (often a cause of illness), it can lead to worse symptoms down the line.
Relying on antihistamine medications and creams is like painting the brown leaves of a dying tree green, rather than trying to figure out why the tree is ailing in the first place. The strategy to actually resolve the problem is to uncover what’s really going on in your body, and address these imbalances one by one.
Which leads me to my third point:
I don’t recommend supplements either…
Although supplementation can be a necessary step in the healing process, I don’t recommend it as the INITIAL step you should take. There is a time and place for the right supplements at the right time – FOOD FIRST and then we can look at supplements!
Your immune system is likely dysfunctioning due to nutrient deficiencies. Today’s food supply is highly processed, and the soil is lacking the nutrients we need to thrive. The amount of fruits and vegetables you should be eating is actually a lot higher than you think.
I’d much rather you start your healing process by getting as many nutrients from your food as possible and then ensure that these nutrients are getting absorbed.
Hence my fourth point…
I consider gut health as the first line of defense
At its core, urticaria is a gut issue, NOT a skin issue.
The skin is a mirror of your gut. If you have itchy skin, redness, and other symptoms of inflammation, there is inflammation in your gut, too. And when it comes to the immune system, 70% lives in your gut.
Here’s how it works:
If you have poor gut health, pathogenic bacteria, pathogens, parasites and undigested food particles escape your intestinal lining and cause havoc with your immune system. Your immune system starts labeling these particles as “invaders” because it knows they shouldn’t be in your bloodstream.
This creates an immune response, leading to allergies, asthma, chronic infection, and skin issues.
Your gut, immune system, and skin health are all connected. And that’s why doctors often diagnose urticaria as an allergic reaction or autoimmune response.
When in reality?
It has everything to do with your gut.
Once my clients have made nutritional changes to spark the healing process, I help them heal their gut naturally by:
- Identifying food intolerances and sensitivities
- Reducing their toxic load
- Optimizing digestion
- Reinoculating their microbiome
- Identifying and reducing chronic stress
And while most functional medicine practitioners will help you do the same, they often leave one important piece behind….
This is the fifth reason my work is different.
I deeply value nervous system regulation
According to the Institute for Functional Medicine, mental and emotional stress changes how your cells function, leading to things like…
- Increased intestinal permeability
- Imbalance in the gut microbiome
- Malabsorption of important nutrients
- Immune dysfunction
When you’re feeling stressed, your body experiences a spike in cortisol and adrenaline, the body’s stress hormones. These hormones deprioritize other functions in the body like digestion, detoxification, and reproduction. This gives your body more energy to fight the perceived stress and survive.
If your nervous system is in constant fight or flight, your body can’t digest its food, absorb nutrients, or get rid of toxins properly.
And as I work with more clients, I continue to witness the correlation between stress and the development of disease. Using the functional medicine timeline, I’m able to identify traumatic life events that play a significant role in someone’s health journey. From there, I support them as they resolve the issue, or I refer them to a mental health professional who can help.
But for some of my clients, identifying and reducing chronic stress is not enough.
Despite working on nutrition, gut health, and nervous system regulation, there’s still something missing.
This inner knowing that something deeper is at play has led me down an even more unconventional path than functional medicine…
The final thing that sets my work apart?
I now believe in the power of energy healing
A couple of years ago, if anyone had spoken to me about channeling, medical intuition, or even muscle testing, I would’ve rolled my eyes and labeled it as nothing more than ‘woo woo.’
But after supporting several clients with chronic conditions, I’ve had to push my own boundaries to seek solutions outside of what science can explain. And after witnessing the power of energy healing firsthand, I’m so grateful that I did.
As more people learn how energy healing impacts our health, I believe a wide variety of energy healing modalities will rise in popularity and become accepted as a standard in holistic care.
For this reason, I decided to integrate PSYCH-K into my functional medicine coaching.
PSYCH-K is a simple, yet powerful technique that uses psychology, neuroscience, and kinesiology to rewire the subconscious mind. By examining limiting beliefs that are influencing your health, you can use PSYCH-K to reprogram these beliefs, and access your body’s innate ability to heal itself.
My PSYCH-K sessions have helped clients:
- Alleviate or eliminate stress
- Release emotions related to trauma
- Reprogram negative beliefs around their health
- Create positive thought patterns
- Accelerate their healing journey
If you’re interested in trying PSYCH-K for yourself, you can book a session HERE.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with clients, and my own experience with chronic hives, it’s that everyone’s journey is different. We all have a unique path to healing that doesn’t necessarily follow the conventional route.
Using the power of nutrition, functional medicine, and energy healing, I’ve been able to help several people treat their chronic hives.
We’ll discuss which strategies you’ve already tried to calm your hives, and come up with the best way to help you get on the right track. I can’t wait to support you and your health!
